The actuarial profession entails the ability not just to understand painstaking mathematical concepts but to convey them, as well, to listeners with varying degrees of aptitude. This requires not just sheer intellect but superb communication skills. Conrado De La Cruz, or Rado to those who know him, is a good exemplar of someone who possesses those characteristics.
Rado graduated from the University of the Philippines, in 1984 as National Science and Technology Authority scholar. He later completed his Master of Science in Mathematics with concentration in Actuarial Science in 1990 from the same university. Rado became a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of the Philippines in 1990 and would later become its President in 2002.
Rado joined the workforce in November 1984 at Great Pacific Life. He left as an Actuary in March 1990. From April 1990 to September 2007, he was with Sun Life of Canada Philippines starting as Resident Actuary from April 1990 to December 1992, Actuarial Officer and Resident Actuary (ASPAC) from January 1993 to July 1997 and Director from July 1997 to September 1997. He then worked for AEGON Life Philippines from September 1997 to November 2002 with various roles such as Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer from 1997 to 2000 and President and Chief Executive Officer from 2000 to 2002. Rado then worked for Towers Watson (Management, HR, and Actuarial Consulting) from February 2004 to October 2010 with different roles such in Benefits Consulting Practice, Client Developer, Business Leader for Flexible Benefits and Treasurer and Member of the Board. He was also Part Owner and Member of the Board of Gruppo Solare, Inc from November 2010 to December 2012. He was an Independent Consulting Actuary from January 2011 to October 2013. He then became Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary for the Social Security System from June 2013 to November 2013. From November 2013 to the present, Rado has been with Philplans First, Inc beginning as Vice President and Chief Actuary and currently, Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary.
Aside from the Actuarial Society of the Philippines, Rado has been active in other professional organizations such as being a member of the International Actuarial Association, Financial Executives Association of the Philippines and Southeast Asia Actuarial Committee. He also became the Corporate Secretary of the Philippine Life Insurance Association in 2002 and the Director of the Insurance Institute for Asia and the Pacific from 2002 to 2008.
Rado has also done well outside his profession. He has married an equally established actuary, Joanne De La Cruz, the Chief Actuary of Malayan Insurance Corporation. Staff of Rado would also often remark at his sense of humor and his ability to communicate. The actuarial society is grateful to have Rado as one of its actuaries.
