The Actuarial Society of the Philippines (ASP) successfully held its 60thAnnual Convention at Hennan Resort, Panglao, Bohol last November 14-15, 2019 with the theme of “ASP@60: Celebrating the Past, Embracing the Present, Shaping the Future”. It was attended by 289 local and foreign representatives from the Philippine Insurance Commission, life and non-life insurance companies, health management and preneed companies and thought leaders and industry experts from allied fields. This year’s convention marked the highest number of delegates.
The first day kicked off with sessions on microinsurance and insuretech, big data and data analytics, and autonomous vehicles and their impact on the nonlife industry. The Fellowship Night featured the much-awaited ASP’s Got Talent with amazing performances from our six finalists. Ed Bayag of Manulife was crowned as the first ever ASP’s Got Talent Grand Champion. He awed the audience with his piano playing performance while blindfolded.
The second day of the Convention was filled with powerful presentations on relevant topics ranging from health and social insurance, IFRS 17 and catastrophe modelling, big data and AI, and financial reinsurance. The Convention was capped off by the Induction Night commencing with a heartfelt speech from outgoing president Dulce Nevado-Aguilar. Insurance Commissioner Dennis Funa, represented by Maricel Basallote, Head of Actuarial at the Insurance Commission, led the oath-taking of the newly elected 2020 ASP Officers and Board of Governors headed by incoming president Tisha Darvin.
The Society of Actuaries, the biggest actuarial professional organization, through its representative, Mr Andrew Peterson, Senior Director of International Committee, has relayed the good news to the ASP Board for including the Philippines to its Greater Asia Committee (GAC) jurisdictions which currently has other 8 country members – Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. ASP looks forward to collaborate with SOA in the area of education, research and professional development for the advancement of its members.
