Mabini Juan

MLJ_V2The name Mabini L. Juan brings one of the Philippine heroes, Apolinario Mabini, to mind. The hero, also known as the sublime paralytic, is a fitting image for a man who is not a paralytic, but has led a life that’s equally sublime. Mabini Juan, or Mabs to those who know him, has stood as one of the pillars of the actuarial profession with his intellect and expertise as foundations.

He graduated from the premier state university, University of the Philippines, in 1965. He pursued graduate studies in statistics in the same university from 1965-1967. A Master in Statistics was completed in 1968 at the University of Michigan.

Mabs joined the workforce as a statistician at the Office of the Actuary at the Social Security System from 1965 to 1967. He then worked for Lincoln National Life at Indiana from 1968 to 1970, beginning as an intern and working later as an actuarial associate. Going back to the Philippines, he worked as Vice President and Actuary for Lincoln Philippine Life, later known as CMG Life, from 1970 to 1974. He then moved to Philamlife as Vice President and Actuary from 1974 to 1981 and later as Executive Vice President from 1981 to 1989. From 1990 to 1993, he became Insurance Consultant for Insular Life and would later be a Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer from 1994 to 1996. He later formed his own firm M. L. Juan Actuarial Consultancy in 1989 currently known as Actuarial Advisers, Inc. He is currently its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Mabs is also the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Manor Management Corporation since 1997 and the President and Chief Executive Officer for Manila Bankers Life Corporation since 2008.

He is a Fellow of both the Actuarial Society of the Philippines and the Society of Actuaries, a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and a member of the University of the Philippines honor societies Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Gamma Mu. He is a National Science Development Board full college scholar from 1961 to 1965, a Fulbright Scholar in 1967, and a Lincoln National Graduate School Actuarial Scholar in 1968.

For a career spanning decades and managing a variety of responsibilities, one can be in awe at how this pillar is still standing, sturdy and committed, not unlike a certain national hero.
